Visit by the Scottish Rhododendron Society

On Friday the 13th May we were honoured by a visit from members of the Scottish Rhododendron Society. The society has amongst its members some of the foremost experts on rhododendrons in the UK.

The visit started in Ray Wood, Castle Howard where rhododendrons have been planted since 1968, when Jim Russell transported the valuable historic collection formed at the Sunningdale Nursery in Surrey to Ray Wood

Many of the plants are of historic importance, like the Rhododendron thomsonii, which was raised at Sunningdale  from seed of its original introduction by Joseph Hooker

After Ray Wood the members visited the arboretum where they were impressed by a number of rhododendrons collected in 1985 by Jim Russell and John Simmons, whilst they were members of the joint RBG, Kew-Chinese Academy of Sciences expedition to Guizhou in Western China..
