BIRDS

A survey by the York branch of the RSPB in 2001 identified 74 species of bird in the Arboretum including the common buzzard, curlew, redstart, woodcock, nuthatch and a single crossbill. Tawny owls nest in all our owl boxes and in August a flock of 30 mistle thrushes were a memorable sight feeding on the wild cherry crop.
On our lakes and ponds - the little grebe, moorhen, coot, mallard, tufted duck, ruddy duck, reed warbler and marsh tit all dropped in to this protected environment.
