Bees, Wasp and Ants - Hymenoptera

The Sand Pit is a rich habitat for various ground-nesting Hymenoptera due to the sparsely-vegetated, south-facing sandy bank with plentiful nectar sources nearby. Various mining bees (Andrenidae) were noted with abundant burrows. These attract ruby-tailed wasps (Chrysididae, also known as cuckoo wasps) which lay their eggs in the nests of mining bees. Spider-hunting wasps were also observed.
