The Long Tree Trail

1
Aesculus turbinata
Japanese Horse Chestnut

Related to the familiar ‘conker’ tree (which came originally from the Pindus Mountains of Greece) it too makes a large tree - up to 40m - in its native Japanese forests. Its yellow flower candles are less obvious than those of the European horse chestnut, but with its large leaves and large, but not spiny, fruits it has its own beauty. Horse chestnuts resent replanting and are slow to grow and establish in their early years
