Known as Lenga in the high Andes of southern Chile and southern Argentina, this deciduous southern beech occurs as far south as Tierra del Fuego. It is quite variable in the wild, ranging from a shrub to a large tree (to 30m). It is closely related to Nothofagus antarctica (you will find specimens of this species nearby). Only introduced to Britain as recently as 1960, it will be interesting to see how it prospers in Yorkshire. These young trees look very promising, and we hope that they will develop the characteristically fine, yellow autumn colour.
